As in the previous vintage, we once again landed in first place among the best dry village wines with our 2021 Kreuznacher Riesling.
On top our Grand Cru 2020 Krötenpfuhl with 90 points also won gold in it’s category.
We are very happy about this renewed awards and see our way confirmed to help the Kreuznacher vineyards to their great successes of the past.

In the vineyard, we have already cut back the first vines. Peace and quiet have returned and things are progressing at a more leisurely pace.

Winner of the “Ortswein” category
“The Nahe is not one of Germany’s great wine-growing regions, at least not when it comes to acreage. But it is one of the most glorious and highly rated, and the density of world-class wineries is higher than anywhere else in Germany. So it’s not easy to want to make a name for yourself here of all places. Stefan Schmidt, however, has set himself precisely that goal; he sees the region’s great history as an incentive. The Kreuznach Riesling, which appears slender and transparent, shows what this can look like. But as soon as it starts to breathe in the air, it knows how to inspire with finesse and depth. It seems to perfectly match the style of the Nahe, which does not copy the Palatinate or the Mosel, but combines both juicy and mineral and is thus absolutely independent. In any case, we are pleased with this success, because it proves to us that we are not wrong in our hopeful assessment of the winery.”

Rieslings from the Erste Lagen 2020 are now available
The wait was worth it: the 2020 vintage Rieslings from our individual vineyards around Bad Kreuznach are now available.
The year 2020 showed mild weather conditions with a total of 316 hours of sunshine, which enabled optimal grape ripening. We started harvesting on September 2nd and were fortunate to harvest perfectly healthy grapes with optimal ripeness.
Riesling Kahlenberg 2020
The Kreuznach site in the Kahlenberg is south-facing and characterized by red and yellow sandstone from the time of the Rotliegend with limestone marl deposits and a little quartzite. The grapes were selectively harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented with the vineyard’s own yeasts, then aged for 10 months on the yeast and 8 months in the bottle.
The Riesling Kahlenberg shows aromas of ripe apples with a hint of crunchy stone fruit, accompanied by ripe bitter lemon. On the palate, the Riesling is juicy and elegant with a silky texture and powerful, mature acidity. The wine appears lean and present with a clear mineral component that provides energy and play. Spicy elements reminiscent of curry in the aftertaste. Finally, a slight saltiness ensures a sustained drinking flow.
Riesling Steinberg. Monopoly 2020
The Kreuznacher Steinberg is located north of the village. Our monopole location is the highest location of the winery (240 m) and has a slight incline. The soil is characterized by terrace gravel with loess admixtures. The grapes were selectively picked by hand and gently pressed as whole bunches for 6 hours. The Riesling was then spontaneously fermented and then matured on the full yeast for ten months and in the bottle for eight months.
The Riesling Steinberg has an aroma of stone fruit with a hint of yeast. With a little air, the Riesling exudes subtle lemony notes of ripe grapefruit and kumquats as well as candied ginger. On the palate, the wine is full of pleasantly ripe fruit. The enigmatic acidity builds up slowly and only becomes apparent with the second sip. But then it clearly shapes this Riesling and ensures a lively and lasting finale.
Riesling Narrenkappe 2020
The Kreuznacher Lage Narrenkappe is located above the village between Hargesheim and Winzenheim. The vineyard is characterized by Rotliegend with a weak loess layer. The grapes for this Riesling were harvested by hand with a very low yield of 35 hl/ha and gently pressed as whole bunches for 6 hours. The Riesling was then spontaneously fermented in fifth batch untoasted tonneaux and then matured on the yeast for ten months and in the bottle for eight months. Aromas of violets and white flowers, some ginger, curry leaves and lemon zest. There are also aromas of grapefruit, white peach and yellow apple. Precise and pure in the fragrance, concise and demanding on the palate with a long-lasting, crystalline arc of tension. In between, the spice of the Rotliegend shines through again and again. The energy inherent in this stone is accompanied by a slightly creamy texture in the powerful finale
Due to the intensive selection and the strong reduction in yield, only small quantities of each site wine are available

Just in time for Easter, we are pleased to announce that the Kreuznacher Pinot Noir Rosé 2021 and the Riesling Rosenheck Kabinett 2021 are available from today, April 1st, 2022.
Riesling Kabinett
Fine and lively fragrance. In the foreground notes of juicy Granny Smith apple and ripe lemon. The cool fruit is accompanied by delicate white flowers, herbs and mineral notes. Extremely lively on the palate and precisely balanced between fruity sweetness and a powerful citric acidity. Aromas of yellow and green pome fruit, stone fruit and lemons. Pronounced drinking flow due to the simultaneous presence of sweetness, acidity and saltiness, juicy finish.
Pinot Noir Rosé
Intense salmon color with a slight ruby reflection. Pleasantly fresh and spicy rosé that combines drinking pleasure with complexity. Sweet and sour cherries can be guessed here as well as red currants and barberries. Alongside the fruit is some blond tobacco and crushed limestone. The fresh acid structure and the elegant fruit ensure a pronounced drinking flow and make it an excellent accompaniment to food.

This week we did a cask sample tasting of the new vintage – 2021.
All very fine and elegant, the Pinots incredibly accessible already with a very typical and fine wild #Pinot fruit, the Chardonnays with decent fruit, beautiful acidity and amazing saltiness. The #Rieslings again very fine and sleek with a shy fruit and a racy and well-integrated acidity – a Riesling vintage for fans! 😊
After a very challenging year and #Vintage2021 we are very thankful and pleased with this outcome.

Our Steinberg Riesling:
In 2021 we fermented Riesling in a wooden barrel with the whole berries and are impressed by the fine phenolic structure that the wine has obtained as a result.

It is important to taste the wines again and again – this is the best way to observe the development of the wines.
On January 27, Stefan Schmidt conducted the online wine tasting with Deutschwein Classics GmbH & Co. KG and found that the 2019 wines have developed very well so far.
The 2020 wines, which were only bottled in August 2021, are still dominated by their freshness and elegance.

We are very happy about the great ratings at this year’s #LagenCup!
#LagenCup2021 #wine tasting #wine competition
The LagenCup is a Berlin wine competition in which only German vineyard wines are tasted and evaluated. Divided into red and white, the LagenCup is held twice a year. Evaluation is blind and according to the 100-point system. The jury always includes top-class wine journalists and top sommeliers from star gastronomy. At this year’s LagenCup Weiß 2021, over 700 white single-vineyard wines were tasted and evaluated. The 10-strong jury devoted five days to the wines. The LagenCup is an independent wine competition and is organized and run by the Berlin sommelier Serhat Aktas.

Our 2019 Aufm Schlossberg #Riesling scored 93 points at Falstaff Verlags-GmbH #Steillagen Trophy!
“Ripe-fruity and balsamic-spicy aromas come out of the glass, apple, caraway, peach. In the mouth, a dense, firm phenolic and a layer of overripe creaminess contrast. Firm acid backbone, good length.” -Ulrich Sautter.
Thank you very much!

30.September 2021
Today we are looking forward to the great premiere: meet 2019 Kreuznacher Pinot Noir.
“The pinot, shining in a transparent ruby red, shows a cool, a spicy and a juicy side. It starts with a slightly smoky and stony note, which is then captured by black berries and some crunchy plums. Herbs and wet stone with a little moss and undergrowth eventually largely remove the fruit.
On the palate, the Pinot Noir shows a wonderful freshness, which is expressed both in a clear, ripe acidity and in a crisp berry fruit. Here, too, the main role is taken over a short time later by a slightly spicy, but above all stony mineral note, which clearly characterizes the Pinot Noir. The tannin here is very fine, very silky and still has grip from a young age. Together with the dry extract, it provides a lot of substance, right into the very fresh and agile finale. ”

Have you ever heard of compost extract?
Compost extract is an aqueous extract from compost. The extract contains billions of aerobic compost bacteria, which we put in the vineyards shortly before the soil is cultivated in order to improve the microbial diversity of the soil and promote humus formation. The ingredients are good, living compost, rainwater, lots of air and time. Since that is such a thing with really good compost, we work here with Urs Hildtebrand and Bionika AG. We have found an innovative partner who will continue to support us in questions regarding compost.
Look at the pictures in the carousel to see the whole composting process!

On the 29th of March we did it again – we have planted our new #vineyard!
In our top-vineyard Narrenkappe, in the red sandstone and loess area, we planted wonderful Chardonnay clones. We chose a quite nice mix of clones 76 and 548. Clone 76 ensures elegant freshness and precise acid structure, while clone 548 is supposed to give the wine a deeper complexity. We are really excited! 😍
